Applications
Rubidium has been used in many different applications, primarily electrical or chemical in nature.
- Thermo-electric generators
- Thin-film batteries
- Photocell components
- Medical imaging
- Working fluid in vapor turbines
- Ingredients in special types of glass
- Spin-exchange relaxation-free magnetometers
Characteristics
Rubidium is the 23rd most abundant element in the Earth's crust. It is a soft, silver-white metal at room temperature. Additionally, it is highly reactive, with particularly rapid oxidation in air.
Recent Developments in Rubidium Nanotechnology
Ultracapacitor Built From Carbon Nanotunes and Nanowires
Researchers at USC have used rubidium oxide nanowires (and other metal oxides) to create prototype ultracapacitors. These ultracapacitors are transparent, flexible and can store large amounts of electrical energy for later release. They believe this research is also applicable towards flexible power supplies and flexible display technologies.
