Applications

Platinum dominates the market for catalytic converters but has a multitude of industrial uses. Common applications include:

  • Catalytic converters
  • Petroleum refinement
  • Other chemical catalysts
  • Laboratory equipment
  • Electrical contacts
  • Platinum resistance thermometers
  • Dentistry equipment

Characteristics

Platinum is a rare, lustrous, silvery-white metal that is resistant to corrosion (does not oxidize), ductile and malleable. Over half the world’s annual supply of platinum is used in various catalyst applications, particularly catalytic converters for automobile emission control.

Blue Nano Energy Products

Blue Nano's catalyst technology features a proprietary combination of gold and platinum nanomaterials. The end result is a fuel catalyst which far exceeds any current market offering at dramatically lower cost due to lower material and processing costs. See the CAT-110 Fuel Cell Catalyst.

Recent Developments in Platinum Nanotechnology

Brown chemist finds platinum nanocube enhances fuel cell operation

A team of chemists at Brown University for the first time has consistently created uniform platinum nanocubes, a breakthrough that could make hydrogen fuel cells more efficient and less costly. Platinum helps reduce the energy barrier - the amount of energy needed to start a reaction - in the oxidation phase of a fuel cell.
