Applications
Along with its longstanding usage in structural and decorative applications, copper is a less expensive alternative to silver for both electrical and thermal conductors.
- Any type of electrical conductor
- Any type of thermal conductor
- Waveguides
- Integrated circuits
- Anti-microbial applications
- Heat transfer systems
Characteristics
Copper is a soft reddish brown metal that has played a significant role in human industry since antiquity. Among elements, it trails only silver for thermal and electrical conductivity. It also finds significant use in hospitals due to its anti-microbial properties.
Recent Developments in Copper Nanotechnology
Copper catalyst recycles carbon dioxide
Researchers at Japan's RIKEN Advanced Science Institute have developed a catalyst using copper nanomaterials to aid in absorbing carbon dioxide for later industrial use. Previously scientists had attempted to use boron-based compounds to capture the abundant greenhouse gas, but without the copper catalyst, the boron would break down sensitive chemical groups.
